What is prey drive? Prey drive is the natural, hard wired ability to chase. Any animal would not survive in the wild without a prey drive. Prey drive is stimulated by movement. We all have seen programs where the lion sees their prey, stalks it, runs it down, and eventually kills it. Without the desire to chase animals simply would die of starvation. Our domesticated dogs are a bit different. They don't hunt for themselves but still retain the prey drive. The level of prey drive should be considered when choosing a pet for your home and unique situation. Huskies have a very high prey drive whereas a Maltese does not. Prey drive does matter when you are training your pet. Prey drive can and does affect a dog's behavior. Before you purchase your next puppy, please consider all the breed characteristics and make sure it is the right pet for you.
